If you get the chance to participate in this amazing Blue Mountains hike, the Grand Canyon Track is one of the  best. Impressive views, lush rain forest, waterfalls and stunning rock formations all encompass the walk. This hike is one of the most popular in the park for good reason.

you’ll navigate many creek crossings

It’s not too difficult

Don’t be turned away by the difficulty rating. Though it is hard in some places, it’s very achievable by anyone with reasonable fitness. On the day I went there were young children and much older adults tackling the mountain.

The two hardest parts are getting down to the valley floor and back out again. But you’ll be so busy enjoying the scenery along the way it won’t matter.

Be sure to take your time and your camera. Also take plenty of water.

whether you choose to ascend or descend, there are many challenging steps to consider but well worth it.

The hike

Heading clockwise will have you at Evans Lookout first. It’s a gorgeous overview of the area you are about to enter.

From here it’s a vertical descent to the valley floor. The steps are continuous and ongoing. Hikers coming upward look exhausted and ask us “how much further” . Not long I say, knowing they have done it pretty tough.

The rain forest is thick and lush, its absolute paradise here. Ferns and natural fauna abound the area.

There are a series of waterfalls along the way, totally picture perfect.

The track is well formed with steps and railings where needed. Creek beds run at many locations and are a  great place for a quick rest.

The rock formations are dramatic and really create a prehistoric feel. The last section we arrive at is The Rotunda. This massive overhang of sandstone wall is a great final stopping place. There are many people here enjoying lunch.

The Balcony is a popular stop

From here it’s upward but at a much easier pace. You have around 30 to 40 minutes to get back to the Neates Car park area.  The path zigzags a lot so after tackling a vertical section you’ll be walking flat for another. It sure makes it easier for that final climb out.

The best direction

There are three car parks where you can start from and this is probably going to dictate which direction you take.

Neates Glenn car park which is the first one will have you heading in an anti clockwise direction.

The next two car parks are best done clockwise.

Personally, I think a clockwise direction is far easier and therefor more desirable. Either way, this Blue Mountains hike will impress.

check weather conditions before you set off. The track is well used by many others.

Consider the weather

We were lucky enough to arrive on a warm summer day. The path is well shaded which helps keep one cool.

Some of the steps are a little slippery so be sure to take appropriate foot ware. A set of sneakers should be fine as long as they are comfortable.

The creek beds can become flooded in heavy rain so be aware of this. You may also have to consider extreme fire danger days.

Check conditions before you set off if unsure.
